Help / Glossary

To help with the usability of this site we have created this help section. Throughout the site you will find green text that when clicked reveals an explanation in this pop-up window. Don't forget to close this window once you have read the explanation.

Company Name (buyers)

You can list the registered corporate name of your company and it will be visible on the site when you purchase a design. If you would like to remain anonymous, leave this field blank.

Company Logo (100 x100 px)

You can upload your company word mark or symbol to create more of a presence on the site.
This only shows up on the site when a design is purchased. If you would like to remain anonymous, don't upload your logo.

Note (buyers)

This is where you can list your company's contact information and give others the opportunity to contact you regarding the availability of your newly purchased design.
This only shows up on the site when a design is purchased. If you would like to remain anonymous, leave this field blank.

Username (designer)

This is the name you want others to see on the site. This can be a nickname, your first name, your full name or a combination of all or any. It's up to you, but it must be unique.

Personal Image (250 x 250 px)
An image that lets people see the face behind the design. It doesn't have to be your face, but it does have to be a .JPG. Square images are better as they look nicer when they are scaled to a thumbnail size of 100x100px.

About me

This is where you let everyone know how awesome you are. Please feel free to write down your interests and experience. Your contact information can be written here as well, but please remember that once you've uploaded a design you are bound to the Design Listing Agreement whereas Rogue Designs Inc. is the Exclusive Broker. If a design is sold directly to a buyer outside of roguedesigns.ca, it will be subject to the special commission that is outlined in those terms.

Title

Try to make this as descriptive as possible. Catchy names can work well, although we strongly encourage avoiding the use of obscure Swedish names and umlauts. Except of course if you are Swedish. Then by all means go ahead. The titles of the designs are included in the keyword search, so if you upload a design for a chair it doesn't hurt to include the word chair in the title so buyers can pinpoint what they are looking for.

Photo
This is what will attract buyers to your design, so make sure this image really stands out and tells as complete a story as it can! Your images will appear on the site in three different sizes: a 100x100px thumbnail, a 550px wide image and when the viewer clicks the 550px wide image on the Design View page the image will appear as its full uploaded size.

The image you upload can be as big as you want, but keep in mind that not everyone has a wide-screen monitor, so don't make it larger than 1000px wide. Square images tend to look the best since the image will be scaled (but not skewed) to fit inside a 100x100px border for the thumbnail image.

Using a scale image ensures you are using all of the available space. Avoid writing a lot of text on the image as this can be written in the description field. Please make sure your name and the date of creation is clearly visible on the 550px wide image.  We recommend uploading a 900x900px for best results!

Description

This is where you will describe what makes your design special. Does it take up less space? Make something work more efficiently? Tap into a new market sector?  Be thorough but concise - viewers don't want to read an essay.

If you have a lot of research supporting your design, please include it in your uploaded Design Package (see below for more info).

Suggested Price

This is where you can suggest the price you feel this product should sell for. This is one of the many factors we will consider when determining the Posted Price for your products.

*THERE IS NO GUARANTEE that your suggested price will coincide with our final posted price*. If your suggested price is substantially higher than what we determine to be a fair market value, we will contact you to discuss what more can be done to get the amount you want.

Keep in mind that Rogue Designs Inc. will take a 35% commission on the final posted price for the service we are offering (not so bad considering art curators take 50%!). If you feel your design is worth more than $6,000 CAN this is probably not the best place to sell it. A three-star design for a piece of furniture would probably not exceed $3,500 CAN.

Posted Price

This is the final sale price of the design as determined by the Rogue staff. This price is based on what we determine to be fair market value of your design. Factors include: manufacturing cost, rating, the designer's suggested price, innovation/usefulness and WOW! factor.

Rating

Since buyers can't view what is included in the design package (CAD, etc) before they purchase a design, the designers and engineers at Rogue Designs Inc. have developed a standardized three-star system that quantifies how well the design intent has been communicated.

We feel it's the clearest way buyers can see how much thought the designer has put into the actual manufacturing of the product prior to viewing the downloadable package.

Designers - Have you thought about what materials and manufacturing processes would be used? Are they appropriate? Have you specified dimensions? Is your CAD file complete with ribs, bosses and draft?

As a general rule; a one star will be less resolved and generally be listed at a lower price than a three star. A three-star design is more or less ready for manufacturing (turn key). Complex designs require a thorough documentation package to attain a three-star rating.

Material
Please check off all the boxes that apply, but use common sense. If you have designed an injection-molded plastic part that uses metal screws to hold the housing assembly together, only check the plastic box.
For buyers with specialized manufacturing facilities this is a great way to narrow your search.

Process
Please check off all the boxes that apply. For buyers with specialized manufacturing facilities this is a great way to narrow the search.

Category
Please check off all the boxes that apply. For buyers this a great way to narrow down your search and find the best products to compliment your product line and distribution channels.

Status

This is to let you know whether your design and content has been approved (online) or is waiting (offline) for approval. Assuming there are no complications your design will be reviewed and visible on the site in less than 24 hrs.

Please keep in mind that each time you click the [Save] button for a particular design, the design will need to be reviewed again and the status will default to waiting.

Tag List (what’s this?)

Please check off all that apply to your design. This is the easiest and fastest way for purchasers to refine their searches to suit their manufacturing capabilities or product lines. We have attempted to distill these lists as much as possible. The more categories you select the wider your search becomes.

Design package (what’s this?)
This is what you are selling, Although the concept has value, it is the work you have put into developing the design that we can evaluate and, ultimately, what the buyers are paying for.

This package can include sketches, 3D CAD models, PDFs, Vector files, Technical Drawings, Images and any Text files that help to communicate your design intent to a potential buyer.

Not all buyers have the same software as you, so to ensure your work is useful always save the files in their native format as well as more universal formats like .IGES, .STL and .3DS for 3D and .PDF, DWG, DXF and .EPS for 2D and vector based work.

All files should be contained within a single .ZIP folder. We recommend you try to keep the zipped folder under 10MB; larger folders will be accepted but they take a considerable amount of time to upload.

Description of uploaded content
Buyers do not get access to your Design Package until they purchase it. Please list off and describe in detail what is included. Be very specific and let us know what software you used to create the files and what version you are running.

Every item should be listed here as the more quality content you have listed, the more enticing the "design package" becomes to a potential buyer. If you have a buyer in mind that would benefit from your product, let us know here - we will contact them directly on your behalf and tell them about your idea.

We have the ability to edit this section and may add our two cents after we evaluate your zipped Design Package.

Include sold products in search

This does exactly what it says. Retailers and distributors can use this to search for sold products and obtain valuable contacts for wholesale purchases.

Country
The current country in which you reside or your company is registered. This is important for determining sales tax on purchases. Designers can also be searched by country.
